Toreros Battle Against No. 4 UCLA

San Diego holds UCLA to three in a 3-0 loss in Westwood

Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. - San Diego women's soccer (0-2) battled against No. 4 UCLA (3-0) on the road in Los Angeles, Calif. on Tuesday afternoon, losing 3-0 in the final nonconference match of the spring 2021 campaign.

Goalkeeper Ellyn Casto was clutch in net for the Toreros, collecting eight saves on 11 shots on goal.

The Bruins got going early in the first as a shot from Mia Fishel was saved by Casto in the first minute of play. Casto recorded back-to-back saves in net in the 6th and 8th minute to hold the Bruins scoreless. In the 18th minute, UCLA broke through to create a 1-0 advantage.

Freshman Leah Pirro looked to even the score in the 26th minute with a rocket to the middle, but UCLA's Lauren Brzykcy came  away with the save. Pirro's shot would be the only on target for USD in the match.

The Toreros faced a 2-0 deficit at the half and were unable to pull any closer in the second. Sydney Hopkins took San Diego's lone shot of the half, missing just wide in the 63rd minute.

San Diego's freshmen once again saw key minutes in the rotation as Katie Baxter, Maronne Suzuki and Pirro all saw at least 60 minutes of action.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday for the WCC opener, as USD will take on BYU inside Torero Stadium at 6 p.m. (PT).
