SPOKANE, Wash. – San Diego men's basketball got a 39-point performance from the bench, but fell 106-69 to No. 1 Gonzaga on the road Saturday evening in McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Toreros (3-8, 2-5) had four players score in double figures, led by
Josh Parrish, who had 13 points.
Jared Rodriguez tacked on 10 points and two steals off the bench and
Joey Calcaterra and
Marion Humphrey chipped in as well with 10 points each.
USD shot 44 percent from the field but could not keep pace with the number one team in the nation, as the Bulldogs hit 56 percent from the field and 21-of-25 from the free throw line.
Gonzaga collected 70 points in the paint, compared to 40 for USD and outrebounded the Toreros 47-30. The Toreros forced 14 turnovers, converting to 10 points in the contest but committed 18 which led to 33 points for GU.
The Bulldogs took an early lead but the Toreros kept the lead to single digits midway through the first half, 19-11. Gonzaga then went on a 12-0 run to take a commanding 29-11 lead and never looked back. The teams traded baskets before another 12-0 run from the Zags closed out the half. Calcaterra landed a three with six seconds remaining in the period but GU took a 51-22 lead into halftime.
Gonzaga kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 68-33 advantage before San Diego went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Calcaterra's jumper with 13:01 to go in the contest. Gonzaga responded and outscored the Toreros the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 106-69.
The Toreros are back in action on Tuesday for a midday game against Pacific in the Jenny Craig Pavilion, with tip-off is set for 12 p.m. PT.
