Toreros Battle Against GCU

San Diego out-hits Grand Canyon in game one but falls in the double header

SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (0-4) fell in both games to GCU (4-4) on Saturday night at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros looked to rebound in game two but were shutout 1-0 in the contest.

GAME 1 | Grand Canyon 7, San Diego 2
Despite picking up seven hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Grand Canyon, San Diego was unable to push across more runs, as the Toreros were defeated by the Lopes 7-2 in game one.

Sophomore Courtney Rose (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for San Diego. Senior Halle Kyler was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 3.1 innings, surrendering one run without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out three.

Offensively, the Toreros were paced by freshman Sophia Delgado, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double and two RBIs. Junior Lauren Hendrickson compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The Toreros were trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. San Diego scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Delgado.

The Toreros were unable to get any closer, as Grand Canyon added one run to their tally on the way to a 7-2 final.

GAME 2 | Grand Canyon 1, San Diego 0
San Diego were not able to record a run against Grand Canyon pitcher freshman Jacie Hambrick on Saturday and were shut out 1-0 by the Antelopes.

Junior Madison Earnshaw (0-2) was brilliant again in the circle for USD, earning her second start of the year. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

Freshman Amanda Limon led the way offensively for the Toreros, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame.

San Diego managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Toreros last got a runner on third in the fifth, when sophomore Elisa Princic made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.

The Toreros are back in action on Monday, when they will take on Cal State Fullerton at 3 and 5 p.m. (PT).
