SAN DIEGO — Camden Vasquez delivered a walk-off single on Saturday evening as San Diego baseball (3-2, 0-0 WCC) rallied for its third consecutive win, taking down Cal State Fullerton (2-3, 0-0 Big West) by a score of 6-5.
The Toreros trailed by a 5-4 margin entering the bottom of the ninth, but began the inning with a walk by Shane McGuire and a single from Caleb Ricketts. Cody Jefferis followed up with a walk of his own, and the bases were loaded for Vasquez, who entered the contest as a pinch runner in the eighth inning. The redshirt freshman outfielder promptly shot a ground ball down the right field line, and San Diego had earned another comeback victory at Fowler Park after both Ricketts and McGuire scored.
Carter Rustad started the game on the mound for USD, and enjoyed a strong outing in his five innings of work. The freshman righty surrendered just one run, scattering four hits while striking out five batters and walking none.
Freshman left-hander Eddy Pelc was stellar in relief, successfully bridging the gap to the bottom of the ninth inning for the Toreros as he kept the deficit to just one run. Pelc fanned three batters in his 1.2 innings of work, allowing no hits and zero runs. He received the win for Saturday's game, evening his record at 1-1.
San Diego returns to Fowler Park tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they continue play in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament and conclude their three-game series against the Titans.
