J. Miller, Lopez, Luevano Lift Toreros Over Highlanders

10 Ks from J. Miller, five RBIs apiece from Lopez and Luevano earn USD 16-4 win

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (8-3, 0-0 WCC) rolled to its fifth consecutive victory at Fowler Park on Friday afternoon, cruising past UC Riverside (2-2, 0-0 Big West) by a score of 16-4.

The Highlanders briefly held a 2-1 lead over USD in the top of the third after plating an unearned run, but San Diego quickly stormed back, scoring eight in the contest's middle frames and five in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away and earn a win.

The offensive onslaught for USD was powered by five-RBI games from Thomas Luevano and Adam Lopez, who both went 3-4 on the evening.

Luevano did his damage by way of two home runs — a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning to deep left-center field and an opposite-field three-run shot an inning later in the sixth — and Lopez plated five with a single and a pair of doubles. Luevano now leads the team with five home runs and 21 RBIs, while Lopez has now notched at least one RBI in five straight games, and has driven in 14 total runs in that span.

Tora Otsuka, Jack Costello, and Shane McGuire each recorded two hits on Friday, combining for four RBIs and 10 runs scored. McGuire's 22 total runs scored this season leads both the Toreros and the nation, as the junior catcher/first baseman is tied with Arizona's Branden Boissiere for the top spot in the country in that category.

Jake Miller started the game on the mound for USD and turned in a dominant outing for the third week in a row, receiving the win to move his 2021 record to 3-1. The sophomore righty matched a career high of 10 strikeouts, walked only one, and allowed just two runs (one earned) in six brilliant frames.

Ryan Robinson and James Sashin combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to conclude the game, finalizing a 16-4 win for the Toreros.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon at Fowler Park with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
