Toreros Fall in Tight Match

San Diego falls to Saint Mary’s in close one

MORAGA, Calif. - San Diego women's soccer (1-4, 1-2 WCC) was defeated by Saint Mary's (1-3-2, 1-2-1 WCC) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.

In the 14th minute, senior Mina Ghazizadeh had a nifty move on the left wing to get free and fired a shot that rattled off the crossbar.

The Gaels took a two goal lead into the half. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Young in her first start of the season had a sliding stop in the 32nd minute to keep a third goal off the scoresheet.

The Toreros were the ones on the attacking foot to start off the second half.

Sophomore Jamie Goralski fired a dangerous cross that ricocheted off of the inside of the right post in the 48th minute that was immediately cleared away by the Gaels defense.

Freshman Aryssa Mahrt fired a shot off of a bouncing ball in the box that was saved by the Saint Mary's keeper in the 53rd minute. Not even a full minute later, it was Goralski directing the ball into the net off of a low cross from freshman Lexi Kaz to cut the lead in half.

The Toreros had another chance in the 82nd minute. Mahrt took a pass from freshman Katie Baxter, made a move and nutmegged the Gaels' defender before firing a shot, drawing another save.

Sophomore Eden Quiroz's consecutive minutes streak came to an end as a second half substitute was brought on. The streak ended at 527 consecutive minutes played dating back to last season.

The Toreros return to the pitch on Friday, March 19 at 1 p.m. (PT), for an afternoon showdown with San Francisco. It will be the first in a line of three consecutive home games for the Toreros.
