First Place Up for Grabs Against No. 14 LMU

San Diego travels to Los Angeles in showdown of unbeaten WCC teams

SAN DIEGO - San Diego men's soccer (2-1-1, 2-0-1 WCC) will face No. 14 Loyola Marymount (3-0-1, 2-0-1 WCC) in a West Coast Conference match on Sunday afternoon. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros return to the pitch after a 3-2 overtime victory against San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.
  • Sophomore Jake Schneider collected his first collegiate goal to open the scoring for the Toreros off of a cross put in by freshman Ross Johnstone.
  • Johnstone then equalized in the 85th minute to send the game to overtime off of an assist from senior Alex Churness. 
  • Churness collected his second game winning goal of the season in overtime.

WCC TITLE IMPLICATIONS
  • LMU and San Diego sit atop the WCC standings after three conference games, with the winner of the match gaining sole possession of first place.
  • The Toreros will have faced the top three teams in the conference after Sunday, with their remaining four WCC matches coming against Santa Clara, Pacific, Portland and Gonzaga.

CHURNESS WATCH
  • Churness continued to impress on Sunday, sending the Toreros home winners with his free kick goal from 25 yards out in the first overtime period.
  • He also chipped in with an assist, sliding a low pass onto the waiting foot of Johnstone, who slotted a right-footed shot into the net.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
  • The Lions are 2-0-1 in the WCC with wins against Gonzaga and Santa Clara.
  • The draw came against Portland.
  • Steven Anderson is the player to watch out for with two goals and one assist already this season. He has also registered eight shots on target.
