SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (16-4, 4-1 WCC) rolled past conference opponent Pacific (7-13, 0-5 WCC) by a score of 15-3 on Saturday evening, earning its 16th win and fifth consecutive series victory in dominant fashion courtesy of a 21-hit barrage at the plate.
"I thought the offense really showed up today," USD head coach
Rich Hill said after the game. "It was great to see
Shane McGuire get back on track, and really nice to see
Dustin Allen come of age pretty quickly."
Like Hill mentioned, McGuire and Allen paced the offense with four hits apiece. McGuire, a junior, was 4-4 with three runs scored and four RBI, while Allen, a true freshman, was 4-4 with three runs scored. Saturday evening's game marked Allen's second career college start; he got the nod for the second day in a row after he added two hits on Friday night.
McGuire was one of three Toreros to launch a home run on the evening. Graduate student
Paul Kunst got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left field for his second home run in as many days, McGuire sent a no-doubt three-run shot to deep right field an inning later, and senior
Adam Lopez crushed a fastball well into the pine trees beyond the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth for a two-run round tripper.
Those early fireworks from the USD offense were enough to propel the Toreros to a 6-0 lead after just two innings of play, but they wouldn't take their collective foot off the gas as the game went on.
Six USD players — Kunst, McGuire, Lopez, Allen,
Cody Jefferis, and
Jack Costello — went on to notch multiple hits in the game, helping San Diego plate nine runs across the contest's later frames to secure an emphatic victory.
McGuire led the team with four RBIs on Saturday, graduate student
Thomas Luevano drove in three to add to his WCC-leading 30 RBIs so far this season, and Lopez, Jefferis, and Costello each plated two runners of their own.
Redshirt sophomore
Conner Thurman started the game on the mound for USD and turned in a solid start, allowing zero earned runs through 4.2 innings with four strikeouts. He was relieved by a tandem of freshman
Jack Hyde and senior
Grady Miller, with the duo teaming up for 4.1 two-hit, scoreless frames to close out the game and finalize the 15-3 win for San Diego. Hyde, who graduated from nearby Grossmont High School, received the win for Saturday's contest, moving his record to 1-0 on the season.
The Toreros' big day at the plate was bolstered by a pair of spectacular defensive plays from Jefferis and
Angelo Peraza. Jefferis ranged to his left at shortstop for a diving stop to end the seventh and save a run, and Peraza leapt up onto the right field wall to rob a home run and put an end to Pacific's scoring threat in the top of the eighth.
"I thought our defense was outstanding," Hill said. "The play by
Cody Jefferis with runners in scoring position and
Angelo Peraza's were both highlight-reel films."
The Toreros have now won 16 of their last 18 games, and will look for their third sweep of the season when the series continues tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Fowler Park.
"We've gotta take care of business tomorrow," the 23rd-year head coach added.
