San Diego Fights to Draw Against Portland

Toreros go the distance against the Pilots

SAN DIEGO - San Diego men's soccer (2-2-2, 2-1-2 WCC) tied Portland (2-2-2, 1-1-2 WCC) 1-1 on Sunday afternoon in Torero Stadium.

Neither team could get into a rhythm early. Portland took a one goal lead into the half thanks to a penalty shot awarded in the 45th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Marley Mascarenas kept the deficit at one in the 47th minute by coming off his line and making a sliding one-on-one stop.

The Toreros constant pressure in the second half finally paid off in the 77th minute. Senior Aidan Marmion played a nice give and go with senior Ross Meldrum before leaving the ball off for freshman Rhys Gourdie. Gourdie hesitated at the top of the box, then slid a perfectly weighted shot past the lunging Portland keeper and inside the far post.

Gourdie's first collegiate goal came from Marmion's first assist of the season.

The Toreros gained a man advantage in the 94th minute after junior Alex Churness was dragged down by the last defender of a clear goal scoring opportunity.

San Diego managed two shots on goal in the second overtime period. In the 104th minute, Churness ran onto a ball in the box and fired on goal only to be denied by the Pilot keeper.

Freshman Ross Johnstone also had an opportunity saved in the 106th minute.

The Toreros moved into third place in the WCC with the draw.

The Toreros travel to Spokane to take on Gonzaga next Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. (PT).
