Toreros Draw with No. 21 Saint Mary’s

Wiher and the defense lock down the Gaels

SAN DIEGO - San Diego men's soccer (1-1-1, 1-0-1 WCC) tied No. 21 Saint Mary's (2-0-1, 0-0-1 WCC) 0-0 on Sunday afternoon in Torero Stadium.

The first half was tightly contested as senior defender Aaron Frey had a sliding tackle in the box in the 15th minute that saved a chance.

The Gaels looked to be on a breakaway in the 17th minute, but junior goalkeeper Matt Wiher came off his line to make a sliding tackle 35 yards out from goal.

In the 52nd minute, junior forward Alex Churness found himself one on one with the Saint Mary's keeper but dragged the shot just wide right.

The Toreros were on the attack again in the 59th minute as junior midfielder Paul Ramlow lofted a cross towards the back post, but a Gaels defender headed the ball away before Churness could tap in. Freshman forward Nicklas Clausen also had a shot just wide in the 59th minute.

In the 89th minute, it was Frey again with a superb tackle in the box to preserve the shutout and send the game to overtime.

Sophomore midfielder Praise Maduekwe had a sliding tackle on a dangerous ball in the 99th minute to close out the first overtime period.

In the second overtime period, the Toreros threatened on the right side as a nice ball was fed to  freshman midfielder Ross Johnstone. His shot was blocked by a sliding defender in a last ditch effort.

Wiher finished the game with six saves for the Toreros. Clausen was the main offensive threat, registering five shots with two on target.

The Toreros will travel to San Francisco to play the Dons next Sunday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
