Overtime Thriller Ends on Churness Strike

Toreros equalize twice in regulation before golden goal seals victory

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - San Diego men's soccer (2-1-1, 2-0-1 WCC) defeated San Francisco (3-3, 2-1 WCC) 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon in San Francisco, Calif.

The first half was tightly contested. San Francisco broke through in the second minute, but could not extend their lead. Junior Marley Mascarenas got the nod in goal today and did not disappoint with a fine save in the 21st minute to keep the deficit at one.

San Diego had multiple chances waved off by the referee in the 22nd and 23rd minutes on headed balls following corner kicks.

The Toreros finally found the equalizer in the 41st minute. Freshman Ross Johnstone recorded his third assist of the season when he curled a corner into the box and sophomore Jake Schneider headed home. It was Schneider's first collegiate goal.

The second half began much like the first with the Dons taking the lead once more.

The second equalizer of the match came by way of Johnstone. Senior Alex Churness took a pass along the sideline and wriggled free for a low cross. The ball fell perfectly to Johnstone who curled the ball into the back of the net to even things up at two.

Things ended quickly in overtime.

Churness won a free kick about seven yards outside the box just two minutes into the first overtime period.

Both he and Johnstone stood over the ball, but it was Churness who took it, blasting a left-footed shot around the wall and into the back of the net.

With the victory, San Diego remains unbeaten in WCC play.

The Toreros travel to Los Angeles, Calif. next Sunday, March 21 to take on Loyola Marymount. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (PT).
