Dominant Second Half Secures Victory

San Diego scored 31 unanswered points to top Stetson, 34-10

SAN DIEGO—A strong second half propelled San Diego past Stetson, 34-10, on Saturday afternoon in Torero Stadium.
 
The Toreros (4-1, 3-1 PFL) scored 31 unanswered points and shut out the Hatters (0-4, 0-3 PFL) in the second half to secure the win on Senior Day. After trailing at halftime, USD put together 342 total yards of offense, while holding Stetson to just 90 yards and five first downs.
 
San Diego finished the day with 458 yards (279 passing, 179 rushing) compared to 244 (188 passing, 56 rushing) for the Hatters. The Toreros tallied 20 first-downs, and finished 7-of-14 on third-down conversions.
 
Mason Randall completed 15-of-29 for 279 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Michael Carner hauled in five catches for 129 yards and a touchdown, while Christian Brown added five catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.
 
Emilio Martinez led the way on the ground with 20 carries for 122 yards, while Terrence Smith added 11 carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Defensively, the Toreros were led by Michael Hawkins with nine tackles (six solo) and two key interceptions in the second half. Kyle Bilchik added eight tackles (six solo), including two sacks for a loss of nine yards and four total tackles for loss (-11 yards).
 
Seven different Toreros contributed to push the Hatters back 48 total yards, finishing the day with 14 tackles for loss. USD also recorded six sacks in the contest for a total loss of 27 yards.
 
Stetson got on the board first with a 22-yard field goal with 1:17 remaining in the first quarter. USD was able to put together a strong drive early in the second quarter, marching 51 yards on eight plays before a fumble on the 10-yard line kept the Toreros out of the end zone.
 
San Diego responded on their next drive, after a 31-yard completion to Carner put USD in the red zone once again. Brandon Eickert's 27-yard field goal tied the game with 4:23 to play in the half but a 18-yard touchdown pass gave the Hatters a 10-3 halftime lead.
 
On its first drive of the second half USD marched 73 yards on 10 plays, culminating with a 24-yard field goal from Eickert to make it 10-6, Hatters.
 
On the very next possession, Stetson's punt pinned USD back on its own 1-yard-line. Martinez broke loose for an 84-yard run before getting tripped up on the 11-yard line. Two plays later, Randall found Brown for a 6-yard touchdown reception to give USD its first lead of the day, 13-10.
 
Hawkins picked off the second pass of the Hatter's next possession to swing the momentum decidedly in favor of USD heading into the final quarter.
 
A 4-yard touchdown run from Smith made it 20-10 with 14:22 remaining in the game and Hawkins hauled in his second interception on the following possession to keep the Toreros driving.
 
USD tacked on two more touchdowns late in the game to build a comfortable lead. Randall found Carner for 26 yards with 3:17 remaining and Smith rushed in from 20 yards out for his second touchdown of the day with 1:17 remaining in the game to seal the victory.
 
Up next, the Toreros will hit the road for their final regular season game, facing Valparaiso on Saturday at Brown Field with kickoff set for 10 a.m. (PT).
