San Diego Rallies to Split WCC Opener

San Diego tallies 5 runs in victory over Pacific in game two

SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (9-19, 1-1 WCC) split the opening day of WCC play against Pacific (11-11-1, 1-1 WCC) as the Toreros rebounded to take game two inside the USD Softball Complex.

GAME 1 | San Diego 1, Pacific 2
Despite picking up five hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Pacific, San Diego was unable to push across more runs, as the Toreros were defeated 2-1 in game one.

Junior Madison Earnshaw (2-8) started and took the loss in the circle for San Diego. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.

Offensively, the Toreros were paced by junior Sophia Bjerk, who went 1-for-3 in the contest with a double and an RBI.

Trailing 2-0, the Toreros first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. San Diego got on the board thanks to Bjerk's RBI double with one out. The Toreros were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME 2 | San Diego 5, Pacific 2
San Diego responded in game two, as the Toreros put up five runs en route to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers.

Freshman McKenna Braegelmann (5-1) got the win for San Diego. The left-hander went four innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing one walk and striking out four. Fellow freshman Katlin Entrup also pitched well, going 1.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.

Bjerk led the way again for the Toreros at the plate, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Malia Benson also put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Rion Simms also chipped in, going 1-for-3 for San Diego with a walk and an RBI.

The Toreros trailed 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Benson came through with two outs, punching a single through the five-six hole to score Alexia Torculas.

Pacific evened the score to one a piece, a score that would hold until the fifth inning where the Toreros exploded offensively. Benson reached on a fielder's choice as Simms got aboard on a walk. Heads up baserunning allowed San Diego to move runners into scoring position before Bjerk came through with an RBI single to make it 3-1 Toreros. Lauren Hendrickson hit a rocket to first, forcing a Pacific error to score Bjerk from third to make it 4-1.

Pacific narrowed San Diego's lead to 4-2 before the Toreros stretched the advantage to 5-2 in the sixth inning. The Toreros scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Simms to clinch game two.

The Toreros will look to clinch the series in game three on Sunday at 11 a.m. (PT).
