Albuquerque, N.M - For the fourth time in program history and for the first time since 2011, San Diego men's golf advanced to the NCAA Championships with a top-five finish at the Albuquerque regional. The Toreros finished the tournament at -12, one-shot above sixth-place Texas A&M, and advanced alongside Texas Tech, Arizona State, Oregon State, and Oklahoma.
San Diego entered the final round in sixth, three shots behind fifth-place but started hot when Donald Kay eagled the opening hole, followed by back-to-back birdies on holes two and three. Andi Xu kept the momentum going with a birdie on the par 4 second and an eagle on the ninth.Â
The Toreros continued to come through clutch on the back nine. Charlie Reiter birded both par 5's on the back nine, and Jamie Cheatham birded the 18th hole. In the end, it was Xu who nailed a 12-foot putt for birdie on 18, which clinched a top-five finish for San Diego.
Xu had the best overall finish for San Diego and finished tied for 10th at -6. Kay finished in the top 20 at -3, which tied him for 18th.Â
Both Reiter and Cheatham finished the tournament at even par, tied for 28th.
The Toreros will now compete in the National Championships at Grawhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., from May 28-June 2.
