San Diego Secures Series Win Behind Earnshaw

Earnshaw dominant for San Diego in shutout victory over Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - San Diego softball (13-29, 5-10 WCC) closed out the 2021 campaign with a game three victory against Saint Mary's (12-22, 3-6 WCC) to take the series behind the arm of Madison Earnshaw on the road on Sunday morning.

The veteran earned her second start of the weekend throwing seven innings, giving up six hits, walking none and striking out three. Earnshaw's dominant effort in game three marked her second shutout of the weekend as she held the Gaels scoreless in game one.

"What a great team win to end the season," said head coach MJ Knighten. "We learned a lot as a group. In this last game, I saw something magical brewing and we all are looking forward for what's to come."

The potent pitching performance was backed by a consistent offense as San Diego tallied nine hits in the contest. Rion Simms paced the Toreros at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double. Sofia Delgado furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Sophia Bjerk pitched in putting together one hit in two trips at the plate with two walks.

San Diego struck first in the top of the third as freshman Malia Benson came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Hayley Hensley. The Toreros loaded the bases with a walk from Bjerk but couldn't push another across in the inning.

Earnshaw continued to deal in the circle stranding two Saint Mary's runners in the third before an efficient one, two, three inning in the bottom of the fourth.

The Toreros went to work offensively in the fifth as Simms doubled to left center before Bjerk singled to advance her to third. Delgado came through clutch a two-out single to push two more runs across.

The three-run advantage would be enough as Earnshaw allowed only one more baserunner in the ballgame to give San Diego the series win over Saint Mary's.
