Rodriguez, Washington Join Women's Basketball Staff

Dani Rodriguez has been named an assistant coach

SAN DIEGO - Dani Rodriguez has been named an assistant coach with San Diego women's basketball, head coach Cindy Fisher announced on Tuesday.

"We are so blessed to add Dani to our staff," said Fisher. "She is one of the bright young coaches in the business and will make a huge impact on our program. Her knowledge and leadership will help all of our players to grow and mature not only as players but also as leaders."

Rodriguez joins the Toreros after spending the past five years coaching internationally in Iceland. Most recently, she became the first woman to coach in the top men's league as an assistant coach for the Stjarnar men's basketball team. In one year as an assistant, she helped lead the team to a second-place finish and a semi-final appearance in the playoffs.

With Stjarnar, she was in charge of post-game analyzing, scouting opponents and in game defensive scouting and practice planning.

Rodriguez served as an assistant with the Iceland National Team system, coaching the Senior Women's National Team in 2020-21 and the U20 Women's National Team in 2019. She entered the coaching ranks as a youth coach in 2016, coaching boys and girls between ages five and 20 for five years. Rodriguez helped lead three age groups to the 2021 Stjarnan Girls Icelandic Championship.

"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join USD's program," said Rodriguez. "Cindy and her staff have done an amazing job defining and building a culture with deep roots. On top of joining a premier staff and team, the university and city are top notch places that anyone would want to live in or work at."

Rodriguez played collegiate basketball at Utah as a four-year starting point card. She helped lead the Utes to a 2013 WNIT Runner-Up finish and is fifth all-time in assists with 452. Rodriguez was one of five Division I women's basketball players named to the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team in 2016.

After her collegiate career, Rodriguez turned pro competing in Iceland from 2016 to 2020.

San Diego has also named Maddie Washington as a graduate assistant. Washington played collegiately at Oregon State from 2016 through 2020 and was a consistent presence on the court for the Beavers appearing in over 100 career games.

"Maddie played at a high level and understands the commitment it takes to be successful," said Fisher. "Her ability to communicate and inspire young people is a gift, and we are very fortunate to have her on our staff. I am excited for her to learn every aspect of our program and gain the knowledge she will need to be successful in our profession."
