Box Score SAN DIEGO — San Diego women's soccer earned its third consecutive victory of the 2021 season on Thursday afternoon, taking down UC Irvine by a 3-1 margin behind a trio of goals from
Michaela Foster,
Sydney Hopkins, and
Bekah Valdez.
"These girls are maturing so quickly," head coach
Louise Lieberman said of her team after the match. "It's their dedication at training, they're fit, they're working hard, they're focused. I'm just so proud of them."
Foster got the scoring started for the Toreros in the eighth minute, finding the high right section of the goal off a corner kick from
Maronne Suzuki.
The score would remain 1-0 USD until the 53:40 mark in the second half, when San Diego scored yet again off a corner kick from Suzuki. Her kick first found
Aryssa Mahrt, whose shot was blocked by the Anteaters, but
Sydney Hopkins quickly deflected the block in for the score.
Nearly 20 minutes later, the Toreros added on. Assisted by
Lexi Nobles,
Bekah Valdez scored to the low center section of the goal to help her team earn a 3-0 win.
Goalkeeper
Ellyn Casto did her part to keep UC Irvine off the board, notching three saves in 79 minutes of play.
USD has now won each of its first three games to begin the 2021 season, marking the first time since 2011 that the Toreros have done so.
