SAN DIEGO — San Diego football scored with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter but could not keep up with visiting No. 14/12 UC Davis on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 53-7 decision to the Aggies at Torero Stadium.
Terrence Smith recorded a one-yard rushing touchdown to get the Toreros (0-2, 0-0 PFL) on the board and totaled 34 rushing yards on the day,
Emilio Martinez notched 46 of his own, and freshman
Ja'seem Reed had 19. Reed tied fellow first-year and local talent
Vance Jefferson (Poway High School) for the most San Diego receiving yards on Saturday with 79, with Reed posting a 32-yard reception and Jefferson notching a 30-yard gain. Erickson was 4-10 passing for 92 total yards, and
Mason Randall was 12-25 for 122 yards and an interception.
Michael Hawkins led the way for the USD defense with 12 total tackles, including a tackle for a loss.
Kama Kamaka had nine tackles, and
Amir Wallace and
Hunter Nichols both posted five. In the secondary,
Hunter Nichols enjoyed a productive game with three pass breakups.
Maverick Martin was responsible for UC Davis' sole turnover on the afternoon, recovering a muffed punt late in the third quarter.
The Aggies (2-0, 0-0 Big Sky) jumped out to an 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter, then doubled their lead four minutes later. By halftime UC Davis was up 22-0, then added 31 more points in the second half to prevail by a 53-7 margin.
The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, September 18 at Montana State in what marks their first road game of the 2021 season. Kickoff at Bobcat Stadium is set for 12 p.m. PST.
