No. 3 UCLA gets by Toreros

San Diego pitches a second half shutout against ranked Bruins

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego women's soccer team (4-3) fell to the No. 3 UCLA Bruins 2-0 on Thursday night in Torero Stadium.

Ellyn Casto kept the game tight in the first half with two one on one saves. The first save came in the 26th minute. UCLA (7-0) floated a ball over the top of the defense that left nothing between Casto and two Bruins forwards. Casto caught the shot and kept the game scoreless.

A few minutes later, the Bruins fired a shot that was destined for the top right of the goal and Casto came up big by pushing the shot over the crossbar.

The Bruins (7-0) took the lead in the 36th minute on a goal from UCLA's leading scorer Mia Fishel.

UCLA staked themselves to a two goal lead at the half.

The Toreros came out firing in the second half with Aryssa Mahrt taking the ball up the wing and cutting inside. She curled a shot that went just wide of the post.

The Toreros clamped down and looked more organized defensively in the second half, allowing only four shots on target. Casto saved all four, including one in the 86th minute that she pushed onto the post before covering up.

The Toreros travel to Santa Barbara on Sunday to take on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The match will begin at noon (PT).
