Singles season opened with a flurry

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego men's tennis team opened the fall singles season all around the world this past week. 

Will Davies and Marvin Schaber headed north to San Francisco for the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco. 

Schaber won his first match 6-2, 7-5 to qualify for the main draw, while Davies dropped his play in match 3-6, 3-6.

Coach Ryan Keckley had some positive notes from the opening day: "

They also competed in the doubles side, defeating Noah Berry of Cal Poly and David Woodland of USF 8-2. 

In Thursday's action, Schaber fell to Stefan Dostanic of USC 6-3, 6-2. Davies came out hot in the evening and defeated Mag Lucas of Cal 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, the team of Davies and Schaber fell to Dostanic and Frye 8-6 in a tightly fought match.

"This is the best fall event in the country and every match is an opportunity to get better and sharpen our skill set. We were put to the test in singles and doubles today as we played against some of the nation's best. It showed us individually where we can get better and what the top level of college tennis looks like." said Keckley after Thursday's results.

Friday afternoon saw the team of Davies and Schaber defeat Phuc Huynh and Nil Giraldez of San Francisco 8-4. 

Davies and Schaber both held individual matches as well, with Davies defeating Axel Labrunie of Hawaii 6-4, 6-2 and Schaber falling to Nick Beaty of Michigan 3-6, 6-4, 5-10.

After Friday's action Keckley said, "Each day we are becoming more comfortable on the court...Tomorrow is another day to get better and finish on a positive note."

Saturday's action saw the team of Davies and Schaber in a pair of doubles matches. They defeated Mason Beiler and Baptiste Anselmo 8-7 (6) in the first match and fell to Stanford's pair of Neel Rajesh and Timothy Sah.

Across the country in Milwaukee, Pa., David Norfeldt made it to the round of 16 in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. 

In the first round, Norfeldt took down Gavin Segraves of the Naval Academy 6-2, 7-5. In the round of 16, he fell to Lodewijk Weststrate of USC 6-2, 7-5. 

In Denmark, August Holmgren was competing in the Davis Cup for his home nation of Denmark. The Danes defeated Thailand 4-1, with Holmgren winning both of his matches.

In the first match, he defeated Kasidit Samrej 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, later defeating Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul 6-4, 6-4. 

Holmgren was especially dangerous on the second serve, where he won 32 out of 40 possible points in both matches. 

The Toreros will be back home in San Diego, Calif. for the Hagedorn Hidden Dual from October 1 to October 3.
