DAVIDSON, N.C. — San Diego football begins Pioneer Football League (PFL) play this Saturday, traveling to rival Davidson for a 9 a.m. PST matchup at Richardson Stadium.
The conference showdown, which marks a matchup between the teams picked to finish first (Davidson) and second (USD) in the PFL, will be streamed live on DavidsonWildcats.com with live statistics, and The Voice of the Toreros, Jack Cronin, will have the radio call on USDToreros.com.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. DAVIDSON
• The Toreros are 13-3 against the Wildcats all-time, with the two programs' most recent meeting coming in April of this year during the "Spring 2021" campaign, a heartbreaking 31-25 Davidson win in San Diego that ended USD's FCS-record 39-game win streak against conference opponents.
• Prior to that loss, the Toreros had won 13 of their last 15 games against Davidson, including each matchup from 2000-2019 except for losses in 2000 (27-13 in San Diego) and 2009 (34-27 in San Diego).
• USD is 8-0 all-time at Richardson Stadium, a span that dates back to September of 2003.
• San Diego's average margin of victory in its 13 total wins over Davidson since the programs' first meeting in 2000 is more than 27 points.
LAST TIME OUT
• The Toreros completed one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in program history last time out at No. 13 Montana State (9/17), playing their third consecutive (and final) regular-season game of 2021 against scholarship programs from the Big Sky Conference as they dropped a 52-10 decision to the Bobcats.
ERICKSON NOTCHES FIRST USD TD
• USD got on the board late in the third quarter when backup quarterback
Judd Erickson threw a 19-yard completion to tight endÂ
Michael Gadinis for his first touchdown pass as a Torero, also marking Gadinis' first score of the year.
• Erickson, who entered for starting quarterbackÂ
Mason Randall (7-17, 41 yards, two interceptions) in the third quarter, was 5-9 with 81 yards, the touchdown, and no interceptions.
• Gadinis leads all USD receivers with 117 total yards, and his 32-yard reception on September 4 against Cal Poly is tied for the longest by a Torero so far this season.
MARTINEZ RUSHES INTO USD HISTORY BOOKS
•
Emilio Martinez led the way for the Toreros on the ground with 27 total yards, which vaulted him into second place all-time for career rushing yards in USD football history as his 2,823 yards passed Jonah Hodges and Evan Harney's mark of 2,809.Â
• Martinez, a senior from Salinas, California, ranks second on the Toreros with 147 total yards this season through three games.
• He's recorded an average of 3.8 yards per carry, his longest run is 17 yards, and he's notched a single touchdown so far in 2021.
REED, MARTINEZ, AND CARNER GO LONG
• FreshmanÂ
Ja'seem Reed had USD's longest rushing play of the day last Saturday at 15 yards, whileÂ
Christian Brown, Martinez, andÂ
Michael Carner each recorded receptions of 20 yards or more, totaling 38, 25, and 22 total receiving yards, respectively.Â
• Brown ranks second among Toreros with 105 total receiving yards, and Reed is third with 88 of his own, including a 32-yard reception on September 11 versus UC Davis that is tied with Gadinis for the longest USD play so far this season.
KEEPING IT A BUCK
• On the defensive side of things,Â
Will Buck notched the Toreros' lone sack of the day, which was good for an 11-yard loss. The redshirt sophomore has eight total tackles so far this year, including 3.5 for losses of 16 total yards.
•
David Ambagtsheer andÂ
Amir Wallace each racked up eight total tackles (four solo for Ambagtsheer, five solo for Wallace), Wallace had two pass breakups, andÂ
Cassius Johnson chipped in with a pass breakup of his own.
• Wallace and Johnson are tied for the USD lead with three total pass breakups apiece.
KAMAKA AND HAWKINS HELPING OUT
• Senior cornerback
Michael Hawkins (Morse High School) leads the Toreros with 22 total tackles, including 13 solo, while senior
Kama Kamaka has 21 and a team-best 14 solo tackles in 2021.
IT'S GOOD
• KickerÂ
Brandon Eickert punched in USD's second and final score of the day in the fourth quarter, a 28-yard field goal that moved the score to 52-10 and marked his second (and longest) successful FG of the year.
