SAN DIEGO — San Diego football (0-4, 0-1 PFL) returns home for the first time in two weeks this Saturday, continuing Pioneer Football League (PFL) play with a matchup against conference newcomer St. Thomas (2-1, 1-0 PFL) at Torero Stadium.
The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. PST, and will be broadcast live on USDToreros.com with live statistics, with play-by-play announcer Jordan Carruth filling in for Jack Cronin on the call.
ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS ST. THOMAS
• The Toreros and the Tommies have never played each other in the two programs' 182 combined years of football experience (117 for St. Thomas, 65 for USD).
• 2021 marks St. Thomas' first year in Division I FCS and its first in the PFL after previously competing in NCAA Division III.
TOREROS PARTNER WITH HILINSKI'S HOPE
• Hilinski's Hope Foundation (H3H), founded by Mark and Kym Hilinski to honor the legacy of their son Tyler, announced Thursday that the University of San Diego will be participating in the second annual College Football Mental Health Week.
• The week will focus on a series of mental health initiatives, beginning October 2, which will honor Tyler, those lost, and those suffering, and will culminate on October 9.
• Players will be wearing special helmet decals, coaches, administrators, and support staff will wear commemorative lapel pins, and athletic trainers, equipment staff and spirit team members will wear hair ties and/or headbands on Saturday in honor of Hilinski's Hope.
BRIAN FOGARTY PFL CLASSIC
• This year marks the fourth annual Brian Fogarty PFL Classic, celebrated at the Toreros' first home PFL game of each season.
• Fogarty served as USD's head football coach for 13 seasons between 1983 and 1995 and is the program's all-time winningest coach with 71 victories, including eight straight winning seasons between 1986 and 1994.
• He also turned in 21-plus years of outstanding service with the USD athletics development office, helping thousands of Torero student-athletes, staff members, alumni and friends.
A REUNION FIT FOR CHAMPIONS
• USD is set to honor members of the fourth PFL Championship team in program history (the 2011 squad) at halftime of today's game. Quarterback Mason Mills and assistant coach Sam Anno are among the former Toreros who will be in attendance as they celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their conference title.
LAST TIME OUT
• Despite taking a 9-7 lead into halftime, the Toreros dropped a tough, 28-16 decision at conference rival Davidson last time out, beginning PFL play with a loss for the first time since 2004, when USD fell 41-38 at Drake in week six.
• The defeat marked just USD's third conference loss since 2015.
MARTINEZ STAYS BUSY
•
Emilio Martinez got the scoring started for USD in the first quarter afterÂ
Kyle Bilchik recovered a Davidson fumble on defense, setting the Toreros up on the Wildcats' 30-yard line.
• Martinez dashed 13 yards for a rushing touchdown several plays later, earning San Diego an early 7-0 lead.
• He led the way for the Toreros on the ground last Saturday with 33 total yards and the touchdown, posting a long run of 13 yards.
SAFETY FIRST
• After Davidson answered with a score of their own, the Toreros put up a pair of points with some help from their special teams unit.
• KickerÂ
Aidan Lehman pinned the Wildcats back on their own one-yard line with a booming punt, thenÂ
Mykee Irving forced Davidson into a safety, making the score 9-7 in favor of the visiting team.
LONGEST PLAY OF THE DAY
• QuarterbackÂ
Mason Randall connected withÂ
Ja'seem Reed for a 44-yard strike midway through the second half that marked USD's longest play of the day last Saturday as part of a 16-27 passing performance that also included a touchdown (an 11-yard completion to
Michael Carner) and an interception.
RECEIVERS ROUNDUP
• Martinez and Carner each recorded 30 receiving yards or more against the Wildcats, andÂ
Christian Brown andÂ
Vance Jefferson notched 25 and 28 yards apiece, respectively.
DEFENSE DOES THEIR PART
•
Mykee Irving led the Torero defense with a sack and 15 tackle for loss yards at Davidson,Â
Michael Hawkins had an interception, and Bilchik recovered a fumble.Â
•
David Ambagtsheer andÂ
Muhindo Kapapa each had 12 total tackles.
