Toreros Fall to Lancers by a Goal

USD drops 2-1 decision in first road game of 2021 season

NORCO, CALIF. — Nicklas Clausen got San Diego men's soccer (0-3-0, 0-0-0 WCC) on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute, but the Toreros fell to California Baptist (2-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC) by a score of 2-1 at the Silverlakes Soccer Complex on Monday afternoon.

Clausen found the bottom left portion of the net at the 14:59 mark in the first half and was assisted by Jake Schneider. USD would lead by a 1-0 margin until the 23:57 mark, when the Lancers' Brian Gonzalez evened the game at 1-1.

After heading into halftime tied, the Toreros kept things knotted at a goal apiece until late in the second half, but could not push ahead for the lead. California Baptist's Luis Mueller scored in the 72nd minute to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Lancers, and the contest would end with the same score.

Clausen led the way for USD with a pair of shots and the goal alongside a shot on goal from Luke Pardoe, Schneider recorded San Diego's lone assist and a shot of his own, and Paul Ramlow notched a shot as well. Goalkeeper Marley Mascarenas tied a season high with four saves.

The Toreros are back in action on Friday, September 10 when they return to Torero Stadium to take on CSU Bakersfield. Kickoff against the Roadrunners is set for 5 p.m.
