LOS ANGELES – The San Diego women's soccer program (2-9-3, 0-4 WCC) fought back late in the match, but could not overcome the early deficit, falling 2-0 to Loyola Marymount (3-3-6, 1-3 WCC) on Saturday night at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions were able to pounce on a few golden chances in the first half, as the Toreros gave up goals in the 28th and 33rd minutes to fall behind 2-0.
- Nevertheless, the Toreros led the Lions in total shots, 6-3, at the end of the first half.
- San Diego would come out of the gate in the second half with a sustained offensive attack.
- Senior Eden Quiroz nearly halved the score just five minutes into the frame, with a gorgeous free kick attempt from just outside the box that went crossbar down, but it wouldn't cross the line.
- Later, a scramble in the LMU box off a corner kick nearly resulted in a Toreros goal, as Katie Baxter got two shots off in tight, with the first being blocked and the second being corralled by the goalkeeper.
- Sophomore Sara Evans nearly made it back-to-back matches against LMU with a goal, escaping behind the Lions defense and forcing the sliding Lions keeper to make a strong save.
- However, the pressure would not be enough, as the Toreros couldn't break through the Lions defense, despite nine second half shots and four corner kicks.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Graduate student Adalee Broadbent played another full 90 minutes, bringing her to 1,821 consecutive minutes played.
- Freshman goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian made four saves in net for the Toreros and now has at least four saves in four consecutive games.
- The Toreros set a new single season high with 15 shots, outshooting the Lions 15-10.
