Women’s Soccer Falls in 2-1 Nail-Biter to Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO – Despite a career-high 11 saves from freshman goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian, the San Diego women's soccer program (2-10-3, 0-5 WCC) dropped a 2-1 thriller to WCC-leading Santa Clara (8-6-1, 5-0 WCC) on Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara was able to get on the board first, as the WCC's leading scorer Izzy D'Aquila scored a 20th minute tally to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
  • The Broncos would add another shortly thereafter, as Colby Barnett scored off a corner kick to make it 2-0.
  • The momentum would begin to change in favor of the Toreros following the goal.
  • After a strong move off the dribble from sophomore Bella Piete, the Alpine, Calif., native sped down the lefthand side and executed a give and go with freshman Talei Moodie.
  • Piete would dribble into the box and fire a cross into the box, where it found the foot of freshman Leila Kahoano, who delivered a half-volley into the back of the net to cut the Santa Clara lead to 2-1, just seconds before the end of the first half.
  • As the second half carried on, the Toreros found more offensive opportunities, with a deep shot from Brianna Pearson nearly beating the Santa Clara goalkeeper just under the crossbar.
  • While the Toreros sought an equalizer, Kevorkian was stellar in net, making six second half saves.
  • Kevorkian made several sterling saves off breakaways from D'Aquila, who had nine shots and six of them on goal in the game.
  • The Broncos would ultimately hold on, as the final attempt from Cameryn Maddox went wide left with just seconds remaining on the clock.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Graduate student Adalee Broadbent played another full 90 minutes, bringing her to 1,911 consecutive minutes played.
  • Kevorkian's 11 saves are the most by any Torero goalkeeper since Ellyn Casto had 11 against BYU on Oct. 9, 2021.
  • With the goal from Kahoano, the top-three point scorers for the Toreros in 2022 are freshman.
  • Moodie recorded the first point of her collegiate career, becoming the fifth Torero freshman with at least one point this season.
