MORAGA, Calif. – Needing to come from behind on two occasions, the San Diego women's soccer team (2-10-4, 0-5-1 WCC) answered the call and ultimately earned a 2-2 draw with Saint Mary's (5-3-6, 1-1-3 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides opened with a strong defensive first half, with Saint Mary's recording three shots on goal that freshman goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian handled.
- The Gaels struck first on the first shot of the second half, when Isabella Santavicca placed the ball into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.
- Needing an equalizer, the Toreros were able to create havoc behind the Gaels defense, when freshman Ashley Wright placed a beautiful cross into the box looking for Delaney Jannone.
- The senior got an outstretched foot on the cross and flicked it over the charging goalkeeper into a wide-open net to make it a 1-1 game in the 63rd minute.
- However, Saint Mary's was quick to respond, as Emily Jensen scored in the 68th minute to make it 2-1.
- Just 40 seconds later, a sliding pass from graduate student Brianna Pearson found junior Maronne Suzuki, who tapped it to freshman Cameryn Maddox.
- Maddox used a quick dribble move to blow past the stationary defender and tuck a low ground ball into the lefthand corner of the net to make it 2-2.
- End-to-end action continued throughout the remaining 10 minutes of the game.
- Kevorkian was forced to make three saves in the final 10 minutes, while Sara Evans had a breakaway opportunity but tucked the shot just wide of the right post in the 89th minute.
- The two sides would ultimately end in a draw, in a second half that featured four goals on 15 shots between the two teams.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Graduate student Adalee Broadbent played another full 90 minutes, bringing her to 2,001 consecutive minutes played.
- With her goal, Maddox improved to eight points on the season. Her total is the most by any Torero since Milan Moses in 2019.
- Daniella Guerrero recorded the first point of her collegiate career as the secondary assist on Jannone's goal.
- With her third assist, Wright now has the most assists by a Torero since Michaela Foster in 2019.
- By securing another draw, Kevorkian matched Brittany Cameron with her third tie in net, good for the second most in a single season by a Torero. The San Diego native needs one more to match the single season record of four held by Libby Bassett in 2003.
- Kevorkian also inched closer to the top-10 of the single season saves list and now needs just five to move into a tie for tenth at 85 saves with Danielle Lopez (1992) and Michelle Craft (2015).
