SAN DIEGO – On a day when the program honored its senior class, the San Diego women's soccer program (2-10-5, 0-5-2 WCC) turned in a timely defensive performance to earn a 0-0 draw against San Francisco (6-5-6, 1-3-3 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On a bright and sunny day at Torero Stadium, the two sides were stride-by-stride throughout the match.
- The Toreros and Dons finished the first half with 10 shots apiece, with the Toreros getting four on target versus two for the Dons.
- Freshman goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian made one of her two first half saves in the 20th minute on a key diving effort to her left.
- As the Toreros went to the bench, the depth of the lineup began to cause problems for the Dons, with a strong chance from Laney Steed in the 39th minute saved by the Dons goalkeeper.
- Several attempts on goal were made by both sides to open the second half, as both goalkeepers were forced to be sharp.
- In the 75th minute, Cameryn Maddox nearly had the go-ahead goal, as her low ground ball hit the left post and stayed out.
- With less than 30 seconds remaining the Dons were able to earn a corner kick.
- The resulting kick got loose in the box and first found the feet of the goalkeeper Megan Nail, who had been pulled to join the offensive attack. Nail got a clean shot on net that was blocked off the goal line by Maronne Suzuki.
- The rebound found Ana Gorlach, who was bested on her last second attempt by a diving Kevorkian to polish off a six save performance.
- San Francisco ended the game with a 21-18 shot advantage, but the Toreros led 7-6 in shots on goal.
TORERO TIDBITS
- With her draw in net, Kevorkian matched Libby Bassett (2003) to tie a Toreros single season record for ties as a goalkeeper with four.
- Kevorkian also notched her third solo shutout of the season, which is the most by a Toreros goalkeeper since Amber Michel in 2019.
- Graduate student Adalee Broadbent played another full 90 minutes, bringing her to 2,091 consecutive minutes played.
- Kevorkian moved into the top-10 on the San Diego single season save list, tying Whitney Persons (1997) for ninth place with 86 saves on the season. The San Diego native is 10 saves away from setting a new single season record, with Allison Worden (88 in 1994) next on the single season list.
- The Toreros set a new single season high with 18 shots against the Dons.
