SAN DIEGO – With 31 seconds remaining in the game, freshman
Cesar Bahena snuck behind the goalkeeper, stole the ball, and scored to lead the University of San Diego men's soccer team (3-3-6, 1-0-1 WCC) to a draw against Saint Mary's (5-4-2, 0-1-1 WCC), 1-1.
San Diego is now undefeated in its last eight contests, including three wins and five ties.
The Toreros scattered 21 total shots, including seven on goal before Bahena's equalizer.
USD moves to 3-3-6 on the season, and will wrap non-conference play at SDSU next Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego produced a chance in the 8th minute, as Tunbridge played a ball across to Bahena, but his shot from 20 yards out sailed just high.
- On a corner kick in the 21st minute, Vicente Ayala's header went just over the crossbar.
- Saint Mary's got on the board first in the 37th minute, playing a long ball down the right sideline and scoring off the bottom of the crossbar.
- Tunbridge nearly tied the game in the 51st minute, but the SMC goalkeeper tipped it over the crossbar on a chip from 25 yards out.
- Dubrovich made four saves over the final 34:42 to keep it a one-goal deficit.
- Bahena stunned Saint Mary's by stealing the ball from the goalkeeper in the 90th minute and placing it inside the left post to secure a point.
TORERO TIDBITS
- USD's eight game unbeaten streak is the longest since 2012.
- Through 12 games, the Toreros have 15 points (12 more than last season).
- Bahena scored his first career goal. He's now tied for third on the team with four points (1 G, 2 A).
- Dubrovich ranks fourth in the conference with 34 saves.
- Tunbridge totaled three shots, and leads the WCC with 38 on the season.
- Alex Churness and Oshea Foster each sent two shots on goal.
UP NEXT
The Toreros will travel to San Diego State for a non-conference tune up next Saturday. The Aztecs hold a slight 6-4 lead in the all-time series, including a 2-1 win at Torero Stadium last year.
