Women’s Basketball Falls in Narrow Decision to FGCU

MANOA, Hawaii – The San Diego women's basketball program (3-2, 0-0 WCC) turned in a strong showing but ultimately fell to Florida Gulf Coast (4-0, 0-0 ASUN), 68-60, on Sunday night on the campus of the University of Hawai'i.

Myah Pace led the offense once again, matching a season-high with 16 points and four assists. Kiera Oakry added 12 points and five rebounds, while Kylie Horstmeyer finished with 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half proved to be a series of runs, as it was the Eagles who started the game on a hot streak.
  • Florida Gulf Coast, the No. 25 team in the latest USA Today National Coaches Poll, jumped out to a 19-7 lead, thanks to a pair of three-pointers.
  • The Toreros maintained their composure and bounced back late in the first and early in the second half.
  • After trailing 21-12 through the first, the Toreros answered to tie the game at 29-29, as Pace tallied six points and Oakry notched five in the 17-8 run.
  • Ultimately, the Toreros finished off a 22-10 second quarter to hold a 34-31 edge at the break.
  • The two sides traded blows early in the third quarter, but the Toreros were able to create some breathing room with a 47-42 lead behind four straight points from Oakry.
  • However, the Eagles turned the game around, going on an 8-0 run.
  • While the Toreros built a 55-52 lead on a jumper by Pace, the Eagles ended the game on a 16-5 run to secure the win.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Pace finished with 16 points for the second time this season. In her last full season in 2020-21, she reached that threshold just twice.
  • Kasey Neubert finished with a season-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
  • The Toreros outrebounded their opponent for the fifth consecutive game to start the season, winning the battle 37-36.
