SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program opened the 2022-23 slate in style, defeating Concordia University Irvine, 69-47, in a Thursday night exhibition at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros opened the game with a 10-2 run, establishing a cushion early that would stay throughout the game.
- While Concordia was able to respond with a 6-0 run, Myah Pace helped the lead the Toreros to a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter with four first quarter points.
- San Diego began to create some distance in the second and third quarter behind some active defense.
- The second quarter saw a 7-0 Toreros run, sparked by three points from Kiera Oakry.
- Nine different Toreros recorded a steal in the game, as the lead ballooned to as much as 23.
- The Toreros held the Golden Eagles to just 25 percent shooting in the fourth quarter, while scoring 20 to finish the game.
- Claire Gallagher hit a big three-pointer off the bench and Ayanna Khalfani scored six points in the fourth to help pull away.
TORERO TIDBITS
- The Toreros finished the game with 20 steals. The 2021-22 squad crossed the 20-steal threshold twice last season.
- Khalfani led all Toreros with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while tallying six steals, five rebounds and five assists.
- Kasey Neubert finished the game with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
- Freshman Veronica Sheffey was also key in the win, tallying seven points and five rebounds.
- All 13 Toreros saw action in the victory.

The Toreros will officially open the 2022-23 season on Monday, Nov. 7, hosting Biola at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The game will tip-off at 5 p.m., and be streamed via the WCC Network.
