SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (1-0, 0-0 WCC) took home a victory in the 2022-23 season opener, downing Biola 75-47, on Monday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Kasey Neubert led all scorers with 14 points and six rebounds, while
Laura Erikstrup added 11 points and eight rebounds to pace the Toreros offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego started the game on a 9-2 run, as Neubert established herself early with four points.
- The Toreros were able to play suffocating defense on the Eagles, holding them to just 21.4 percent from the field and only eight points in the opening quarter, as the Toreros extended their advantage to 20-8 by the end of the frame.
- Biola would not go away quietly, as they mounted a second quarter answer. The Eagles pushed back into the game by shooting 58.3 percent, but the Toreros wouldn't budge.
- The third quarter proved to be an entirely different story, as the Toreros suffocated the Eagles with a 15-2 opening run out of halftime.
- Ayanna Khalfani tallied multiple baskets during the stretch, while Kiera Oakry hit a key three-pointer to pace the Toreros.
- At the end of the quarter, the Toreros had increased their lead to 23 points and outscored the Eagles 21-5 in the frame.
- Erikstrup and Myah Pace helped put the game away in the fourth, as each began to make their presence felt on offense.
- Erikstrup had seven points and six rebounds in the quarter, while Pace hit a key three-pointer and eclipsed 10 rebounds in the period.
TORERO TIDBITS
- San Diego has now won back-to-back season openers, and 13 of their last 15 season openers.
- The Toreros improve to 3-6 all-time against Biola.
- Neubert's 14 points are a career-high in a San Diego uniform. The Elizabeth, Colo., native did tally 22 points in a game while attending Hawai'i.
- The Toreros pulled down 53 rebounds in the win. That's the most in a single game since San Diego tallied 55 rebounds against San Diego Christian on Dec. 11, 2020. San Diego finished with a 53-19 rebounding advantage.
- Sophomore transfers Jess Finney and Claire Gallagher, as well as freshman Veronica Sheffey each made their official Torero debuts, with Sheffey recording four points and six assists in 21 minutes.
