SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (6-5, 0-0 WCC) fell in its 2022 non-conference finale at San Diego State (9-2, 0-0 MWC), 68-45, on Saturday afternoon at Viejas Arena.
Kiera Oakry led the Toreros offense with 17 points and four rebounds.
Ayanna Khalfani added seven points and
Laura Erikstrup pulled down 10 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams opened up the opening quarter with strong defense, limiting each other's scoring opportunities.
- The Toreros and Aztecs both shot under 25%, as a combined 13 turnovers were forced in the period.
- Nevertheless, Oakry got going in the second quarter, scoring seven points in the period.
- The Aztecs also found their shot in the second, shooting 54.5% and ultimately finishing the half up 29-17.
- San Diego State was able to open up a gap in the third, opening the half on an 11-2 run.
- Kylie Horstmeyer added three points later in the period, but the Toreros would trail 49-27 at the end of the third.
- While the Toreros were able to start to find their shot late in the fourth, they were not able to mount a comeback, as the Aztecs finished off the win.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Myah Pace moved into sole possession of ninth on the Toreros all-time list in made free throws, passing Morgan Henderson. She now needs 22 more free throws to move into eighth past Erin Malich.
- Erikstrup matched a career-high in rebounds with 10 on the afternoon. She is now averaging 8.0 rebounds per game over her last three contests.
- San Diego out-rebounded their ninth opponent this season in the loss.
