Toreros Drop Winter Classic Opener to New Mexico State

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-4, 0-0 WCC) nearly recovered after an early shooting slump, but ultimately fell, 57-52, to New Mexico State (3-4, 0-0 WAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Kiera Oakry led the way with 13 points on offense, while Kasey Neubert added a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a quick start for the Toreros, who got an early basket from Myah Pace and a three-pointer from Oakry to hold a 5-2 lead.
  • The Aggies were able to keep it close, with the Toreros holding an 11-9 advantage at the end of the first.
  • While the Toreros struggled to shoot in the second quarter, Oakry and Neubert continued to be adept at drawing contact, keeping San Diego in the game at the free throw line.
  • Oakry and Neubert each hit four free throws in the quarter, but New Mexico State held a 28-21 lead at halftime.
  • The offense clicked early in the third, as Ayanna Khalfani scored the opening basket of the half and the Toreros cut the lead to two with 6:04 remaining in the period.
  • The two teams traded runs for the remainder of the game, as New Mexico State answered with a 9-3 run of their own, before the Toreros opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run behind a three pointer from Jess Finney.
  • While Neubert cut the lead to three with more free throws, the Toreros couldn't complete the comeback, ultimately falling 57-52.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Pace played in her 100th game as a Torero in the loss, while also passing 3,000 minutes played.
  • Neubert recorded her first double-double as a Torero and the second of her career, after tallying one while playing at Hawaii.
  • The 46 rebounds by the Toreros are their most against a Division I opponent since recording 46 at Loyola Marymount on Feb. 8, 2021
