SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (1-0, 0-0 WCC) began the
Brock Ungricht era in style on Friday night, taking down Oregon (0-1, 0-0 Pac-12) by a score of 11-1 to earn a dominant win before a crowd of 1,146 at Fowler Park in their season opener.
AN OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
- Sophomore Chase Meidroth got the scoring started and the crowd roaring with a towering two-run homer in the bottom of the first, plating junior shortstop Cody Jefferis to give the Toreros an early 2-0 lead.
- Sophomore Angelo Peraza scored on a wild pitch, then sophomore Jack Costello drove in Jefferis to double the USD advantage.
- Sophomore Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) added key insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh by lacing a single back up the middle to plate junior Caleb Ricketts and sophomore Jack Costello, then Peraza drove in Sim and true freshman Justin DeCriscio to stretch the Torero lead to 8-1.
- USD added three more runs in the inning courtesy of a booming double to left field from sophomore Dustin Allen that scored sophomore Will Worthington, and a two-RBI single from Jefferis that drove in Allen and Peraza.
RENNIE RETURNS WITH A VENGEANCE
- Senior right-hander Garrett Rennie turned in a masterful performance in his first start after recovering from Tommy John surgery (and just his second appearance in a Torero uniform), tossing 6.1 innings while surrendering just a single unearned run.
- The Los Alamitos, California native struck out five, walked two, and scattered six hits.
- He was able to settle in after surrendering a pair of singles in the first.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Jefferis, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored on the evening, turned a pivotal double play in the top of the seventh with the game hanging in the balance.
- He helped sophomore reliever Ivan Romero out of a jam by making a diving stop up the middle, stepping on second base, and making a strong, off-balance throw to turn two.
- Meidroth, Peraza, and Sim all joined Jefferis in notching a pair of RBIs.
- Peraza and Jefferis each scored twice, while Meidroth, Ricketts, Costello, DeCriscio, Allen, Sim, and Worthington each scored once.
- Romero, redshirt freshman Drake Frize, and redshirt sophomore James Sashin teamed up for 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to finish the game.
