Mautz, Allen Power Toreros Past Ducks

San Diego baseball beats Oregon 10-4 at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — Sophomore Brycen Mautz (Westview High School) turned in a dominant performance on the mound, sophomore Dustin Allen drove in three at the plate, and San Diego baseball (2-0, 0-0 WCC) earned another emphatic win over Oregon (0-2, 0-0 Pac-12), downing the Ducks by a score of 10-4 before a crowd of 946 at Fowler Park.

BATS COME ALIVE ONCE AGAIN
  • Sophomore Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) got the scoring started for the Toreros when he reached on an error, scalding a line drive off Oregon second baseman Gavin Grant's glove to plate sophomores Jack Costello and Chase Meidroth.
  • For the second night in a row, San Diego enjoyed a seven-run inning, this time coming up big in the bottom of the third via a sacrifice fly from junior Caleb Ricketts, a throwing error from the Ducks that plated Meidroth, a wild pitch that brought home Costello, a booming, bases-clearing triple into the right-center field gap from Allen, and another wild pitch that allowed the Arcadia, California native to dash home and complete his trip around the bases.
  • After Oregon answered back with four runs of their own, Costello provided the counterpunch by shooting a single back up the middle to make it a 10-4 game in favor of the home team, an advantage that would hold fast to earn San Diego its second consecutive win.
MAUTZ MARVELOUS ON MOUND
  • The 6-foot-3 lefty took control from the get-go on Saturday night, striking out the side in the first inning en-route to a career-high 12 total K's.
  • His final line: 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 1 BB, 12 K, and the win.
HYDE SHUTS IT DOWN IN RELIEF
  • Sophomore Jack Hyde took over for Mautz in the top of the sixth and promptly extinguished the Oregon offense, working his way out of a jam with a pair of runners on base to end the inning before he tallied a trio of strikeouts in 3.1 innings of one-hit ball.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Costello put together a multi-hit game for the second consecutive evening, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.
  • Meidroth was 1-for-2 with a single, two runs scored, and a pair of walks, and redshirt sophomore Camden Vasquez was 1-for-3 with a single, a walk, and a run scored.
  • Allen's three-RBI night set a new career high for the centerfielder, eclipsing his previous mark of one.
