SAN DIEGO — Redshirt sophomore outfielder
Camden Vasquez went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, a run scored, and his first career home run, but San Diego baseball (3-1, 0-0 WCC) couldn't hang on late against Oregon, dropping a 21-11 decision to the Ducks on Monday afternoon at Fowler Park.
The Toreros led 11-9 heading into the eighth inning, but were undone after Oregon plated 12 runs in the top of the frame to secure the win and stave off a San Diego sweep.
"I thought it was great for our team to be able to play four games against such a high-level opponent," USD head coach
Brock Ungricht said after the game. "It was a great challenge and a great test for our guys to get in there and learn how to compete through adversity."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vasquez got the scoring started for USD with an RBI single through the right side that plated sophomore infielder Kevin Sim, earning the Toreros an early lead.
- After Oregon tied it at one in the fourth, Vasquez delivered yet again, hammering a two-run homer over the right field wall that again brought home Sim, moving the score to 3-1 in favor of the home team.
- Junior shortstop Cody Jefferis added on with an RBI double into the right field corner, and USD had itself a 4-1 advantage.
- Oregon again tied the game in the fifth via a home run and a single, but Sim again provided an answer for San Diego, scalding an RBI single off of Ducks pitcher Scott Ellis to score sophomore Jack Costello and put the Toreros back in front, 5-4.
- Sophomore infielder Will Worthington brought home another run with a safety squeeze bunt, then true freshman Ariel Armas added on with a single to bring home Sim before Allen made it an 8-4 lead by grounding into a fielder's choice.
- Oregon cut into the USD advantage once more in the sixth to bring it to 8-6, but San Diego answered immediately when Caleb Ricketts sliced an RBI double down the right field line to plate Costello, and Vasquez notched his career-best fourth RBI of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly that drove in Ricketts. By the end of the inning, the Toreros led 10-6.
- After the Ducks plated two more runs in the following inning via a home run and a bases-loaded walk, Ricketts rallied his team once more, bringing a run home when he forced a throwing error by hustling up the line on a dropped third strike in the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough, as Oregon plated 12 runs in the eighth to secure a 21-11 win.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Ricketts and Sim each had three hits on the day, behind only Vasquez and the Ducks' Josh Kasevich for the game-high.
- Both Ricketts and Sim came around to score three runs apiece.
- Six Toreros had a hit in the game, seven scored a run, and seven drove in a run.
- Jefferis and Armas each drew two walks.
- The Toreros' trio of wins over Oregon on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday marks USD's best performance against a Pac-12 team in a series since 2002, when San Diego swept Oregon State at Cunningham Field.
