SAN DIEGO — Senior right-handed pitcher
Garrett Rennie turned in his second consecutive strong start and sophomore utility player
Angelo Peraza notched a late RBI, but a last-chance rally fell short for San Diego baseball (3-2, 0-0 WCC) on Friday as visiting UNLV (2-3, 0-0 MWC) dealt the Toreros their second loss of the season by a score of 2-1 at Fowler Park.
RENNIE STRONG AGAIN
- Rennie threw seven innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits while walking only one and striking out a career-high six.
- His lone blemish of the evening came in the top of the sixth, when he surrendered a solo home run to UNLV's Diego Alarcon that cleared the left field wall to give the Runnin' Rebels a 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Ivran Romero (Poway High School) came on in relief of Rennie and surrendered a run on a hit while recording a single strikeout, moving the score to 2-0 in favor of UNLV.
- Redshirt junior Ryan Robinson tossed a scoreless ninth, working around a walk with a pair of strikeouts to keep the game close late.
LATE LIFE FOR THE TOREROS
- Sophomore outfielder/first baseman Jack Costello began the bottom of the ninth with a double, then advanced to third on a groundout from junior catcher Caleb Ricketts.
- Costello came around to score on a clutch two-out single to center field from Peraza, but the Toreros would get no closer, falling to UNLV by a 2-1 margin.
TORERO TIDBITS
- True freshman Ariel Armas notched a single after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, marking his third straight game with a hit in three games to begin his college career.
- Sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen went 1-for-3 with a single, and has a hit in four of five games to begin the season.
- Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth was 1-for-3 with a hit and a walk.
