SAN DIEGO — Sophomore lefty
Brycen Mautz was brilliant on the mound, sophomores
Kevin Sim and
Angelo Peraza went yard, and San Diego baseball (4-2, 0-0 WCC) earned a hard-fought victory over Fresno State on Saturday night at Fowler Park, beating the Bulldogs (3-3, 0-0 MWC) by a score of 4-0 before a crowd of 515.
BRYCEN BRILLIANT YET AGAIN
- Mautz (2-0), a San Diego, California native (Westview High School), turned in a strong start for the second straight week, notching nine strikeouts through six shutout innings while allowing only three hits and two walks to earn the win.
- He gave way to redshirt sophomore Conner Thurman in the seventh, who tossed a scoreless frame while recording a strikeout, then sophomore Jack Hyde (Grossmont High School) threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief with a two strikeouts to finish the game.
SIM AND PERAZA POWER UP
- Sim (Torrey Pines High School) got the scoring started with a solo blast over the left field wall in the bottom of the second to give USD an early 1-0 lead, marking the infielder's third career home run.
- Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth doubled the San Diego advantage in the bottom of the fifth, shooting an RBI single through the left side to plate sophomore Will Worthington.
- Sophomore outfielder/first baseman Jack Costello added on with another single in the seventh to right-center to score junior shortstop Cody Jefferis, then Peraza (St. Augustine High School) delivered the final blow, blasting a solo shot to left field on a full count for his first career round-tripper.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Each of the USD players with RBIs on Friday (Meidroth, Costello, Peraza, and Sim) are sophomores, as is Hyde.
- Local players played a key role in the Toreros' 4-0 win, as Peraza (St. Augustine), Sim (Torrey Pines), Mautz (Westview), and Hyde (Grossmont) all hail from the San Diego area and attended nearby high schools.
- Meidroth led all Toreros with two hits, marking his third straight game with a knock and his first multi-hit performance of the season.
- Jefferis was 1-for 4.
- Hyde has yet to allow a run in 5.1 innings out of the bullpen so far in 2022.
