SAN DIEGO — Sophomore infielder
Kevin Sim homered for the second consecutive game and five Toreros notched multi-hit performances, but a late-game rally fell short as USD (4-3, 0-0 WCC) dropped a 16-9 decision to UNLV (4-3, 0-0 WCC) on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park as it concluded play in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Runnin' Rebels scored eight in the top of the second to jump out to an early lead, Sim (Torrey Pines High School) answered back in the bottom of the frame with a single to left field that plated sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) before sophomore Jack Costello crushed a towering solo home run into the trees beyond the left field fence to make it 8-2.
- UNLV extended its lead to 14-2 across the game's middle frames with a pair of home runs, but Sim again answered the Runnin' Rebels, this time sending an opposite-field grand slam to right field that scored true freshman Ariel Armas (Saint Augustine High School), Peraza, and junior catcher Caleb Ricketts.
- Costello again followed Sim with a big hit of his own, singling back up the middle to bring home junior shortstop Cody Jefferis and cut the deficit to 14-7.
- USD battled back one more time with two runs in the bottom of the ninth (a bases-loaded walk from junior outfielder/first baseman Max Jung-Goldberg and an RBI groundout from sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen) after UNLV added a pair of runs on two singles in the eighth and ninth, but it wouldn't be enough, dealing the Toreros a 16-9 loss.
