PHOENIX — Sophomore lefty
Brycen Mautz (Westview High School) turned in his most dominant start at USD yet, the Torero offense tied its season high with 15 hits at the plate, and San Diego baseball (7-6, 0-0 WCC) cruised to a 7-1 victory over Grand Canyon (9-6, 3-0 WAC) on Saturday night at GCU Ballpark for its first road win of 2022.
Mautz (3-1) tossed seven shutout innings on the mound, scattering three hits and walking only one as he struck out nine en-route to receiving his third win of the season.
Ten different USD players notched a hit, including two three-hit performances and a two-hit performance. San Diego scored three in the second inning, two in the fourth, and one in both the seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- True freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio got the scoring started for the Toreros in the top of the second, singling through the left side to bring home sophomore infielder Will Worthington.
- Fellow sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth kept things rolling with an RBI single through the left side of his own, and USD had itself a 3-0 advantage.
- Worthington, who hails from Phoenix and attended nearby Brophy College Prep, added on in the top of the fourth with a booming home run to left field, a solo blast that moved the score to 4-0 in addition to marking his first homer of the season and his second career longball.
- Three frames later, sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) split the right-center field gap with a towering double, bringing home sophomore utility player Jack Costello to make it a 6-0 game.
- DeCriscio bookended the Toreros scoring efforts with one final insurance run in the eighth, beating out a ground ball to shortstop for his third hit of the evening to give his team a 7-0 advantage.
- Grand Canyon got on the board in the bottom of the eighth via an RBI single from Elijah Buries to make it 7-1 but would get no closer, with redshirt sophomore right-hander James Sashin shutting down the Lopes to earn his team the victory.
