Women's Basketball Set to Play Cal Baptist in First Round of WNIT

The Toreros will battle Cal Baptist on Thursday, March 17 at 6 PM

FORT COLLINS, COThe WNIT announced that San Diego earned an at-large bid to play in the WNIT tournament. The Toreros will battle Cal Baptist on Thursday, March 17, 2022 in Riverside, CA at 6 p.m. PT. 

The Toreros have another shot for a postseason run beginning with their contest against Cal Baptist. This is the first time in program history that the two teams will match up. Stay tuned for more information on how to access the live stream and live stats during the game. 

San Diego has competed in the WNIT tournament six times since 2006 with one final four run and two sweet 16 appearances. The Toreros qualified for the WNIT five consecutive seasons from 2011 through 2016. To recap, in 2006 the Toreros competed against UC Santa Barbara and lost 75-63 in the first round. In the 2011-2012 season, the Toreros were WNIT Final Four finalists. San Diego went down to Oklahoma State in a tough 73-57 loss to close out their 2011-2012 WNIT run.

During the 2012-2013 season, the Toreros fell to Utah 61-50 in the second round. Next season, the Toreros advanced to the sweet 16 and lost 62-55 to Washington. In the 2014-2015 season, San Diego lost in the second round to UCLA in a heartbreaking 63-58 loss. In their most recent appearance in the 2015-2016 season, the Toreros fought hard against Michigan but fell short 78-51 in the sweet 16. The Toreros qualified for the WNIT in the 2020-2021 season, however, COVID-19 protocols prevented the team from competing.
