SAN DIEGO — Graduate student
Ian Churchill turned in a solid start on the mound, the USD offense set forth 14 hits, and San Diego baseball (9-6, 0-0 WCC) hung on for a wild victory over Cal State Fullerton (4-11, 0-0 Big West) on Tuesday night, taking down the Titans by an 11-10 margin at Fowler Park.
Churchill surrendered a run in the first inning then settled down for four scoreless frames. Three Toreros turned in three-hit performances, one San Diego player had two, and seven notched at least one hit on the night. USD plated a run in the first, two in the second, six in the seventh, and one in the eighth to build what was at one point a 10-4 lead, but Cal State Fullerton pulled within one in the ninth. Sophomore left-handed pitcher
Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy) finished the game on the mound for the Toreros and was able to work his way out of trouble, allowing a single run on a bases-loaded walk before he retired the next three batters in order to end it.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUF got on the board first with a solo home run, then junior catcher Caleb Ricketts answered back with an RBI single in the bottom half of the opening frame, bringing sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth in to tie the game at one.
- Meidroth drove in a run of his own an inning later, pushing USD ahead with a two-RBI single back up the middle that plated sophomore outfielder Dustin Allen and true freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio to make it 3-1 in favor of the home team.
- Junior shortstop Cody Jefferis continued to heat up with a booming RBI double in the fourth, plating Meidroth for the third time on Tuesday to expand the San Diego advantage to 4-1.
- After the Titans rallied to tie it in the sixth and seventh with a pair of singles, Ricketts provided the counterpunch yet again, ripping a double down the right field line to bring home Costello and again put USD back out in front.
- Sophomore infielder Will Worthington then stepped up and delivered a clutch pinch-hit double off the bench, plating Ricketts and sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) to make it 7-4.
- Two singles would round out San Diego's scoring in what ended up being a six-run frame, one of the bunt variety (a textbook one up the first base line from Allen), and one through the right side (Jefferis). By the end of the seventh, USD commanded a 10-4 lead.
- Cal State Fullerton struck back in the eighth with a three-run shot to cut the Toreros' advantage to just three, but Ricketts again had an answer, golfing a towering solo shot over the right field wall for a key insurance run.
- Ricketts' longball would prove to be the difference, as the ninth saw the Titans bring home three via a two singles and a walk to cut the San Diego lead to just one, but Colleran was able to take control and restore order, earning the game's last three outs with a fly ball to center, a strikeout, and a fly ball to right to stave off the CSUF comeback and secure his team an 11-10 Tuesday night win.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Churchill's five innings on the mound marked his second longest start of 2022, behind only his 6.1 inning effort in his first outing of the year versus Oregon.
- The veteran lefty scattered five hits, struck out three, and did not walk a batter on Tuesday, the first time so far this season he has avoided issuing a free pass after allowing one in each of his previous three starts.
- Meidroth was 3-for-6 with a game-high three runs scored and two RBIs, marking his sixth multi-hit performance so far this year.
- Ricketts matched Meidroth's hit total with a 3-for-5 night, coming around to score two runs alongside a tied-for-team-best three RBIs.
- The Newport Beach, California native's trio of hits ties his season high, which he set on February 21 versus Oregon.
- Jefferis joined Meidroth and Ricketts with three hits of his own (3-for-5), marking the shortstop's third multi-hit game of the year and the most he's racked up in a single contest so far this season.
- Allen was 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, and two RBIs, marking the second straight game in which he's tallied multiple hits.
- Costello bounced back from an 0-for-3 start to the evening with a double down the left field line, extending his hit streak to four as he recorded his 14th game with a hit out of the Toreros' 15 games so far in 2022.
- DeCriscio was 1-for-3 with a single and has now hit safely in three out of his last five games.
- Colleran entered in the ninth in relief of redshirt sophomore James Sashin, earning the save as sophomore righty Jack Hyde (1.0 IP, 4 ER) earned the win.
