MALIBU, Calif. — Senior
Garrett Rennie turned in five solid innings on the mound but San Diego baseball (9-7, 0-1 WCC) couldn't find the runs to support him, dropping its first West Coast Conference game of the season to Pepperdine (10-6, 1-0 WCC) by a 3-0 margin on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rennie (1-2) tossed five innings of two-run ball, scattering six hits and a walk against four strikeouts to keep San Diego within striking distance.
- The lone blemish on his outing came in the bottom of the second, when Pepperdine's Ryan Johnson bounced a chopper over freshman third baseman Justin DeCriscio's head for a two-RBI double that gave the Waves a 2-0 lead.
- Pepperdine expanded its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth via a home run from infielder Devon Walczykowski.
- USD threatened in the second, seventh, and eighth innings with singles from DeCriscio and sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) and a walk from sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth, but was undone by grounding into three double plays and leaving five runners on base.
TORERO TIDBITS
- DeCriscio led the Toreros with two hits on the day, followed by one-hit performances from Meidroth, sophomore utility player Jack Costello, Sim, and redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez.
- Jefferis made a pair of outstanding defensive plays at shortstop, and Vasquez took extra bases away with a leaping catch against the right field wall.
- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ivran Romero (Poway High School) threw a pair of scoreless frames in relief of Rennie, allowing three hits and a walk while recording a single strikeout.
- USD's 2-0 loss marks the first time it's been shut out through 15 games so far this season.
