Toreros Advance to Second Round of WNIT

Toreros defeat the Cal Baptist Lancers 76-67

Box Score RIVERSIDE, CA — San Diego advances to the second round of the WNIT after outhustling the Cal Baptist Lancers 76-67 at CBU Events Center. 

Steph Gorman led the Toreros with a career high 22 points, nine steals, and three rebounds. Gorman's tremendous effort on the court resulted in her achieving a milestone of 1,000 career points. Gorman is the second player to accomplish this offensive milestone this season and joins the company of Sydney Hunter. Another outstanding defensive performance was from Kendall Bird who set a new career high of 11 rebounds. Bird surpassed her previous record of eight rebounds against LMU on February 8, 2022. 

On defense, San Diego collected a season high of 45 rebounds. In the fourth quarter alone, the Toreros grabbed 16 rebounds and Kendall Bird grabbed half of those, for a total of eight. The Toreros collected 14 steals, nine were from Steph Gorman, and had two blocks. 

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Kendall Bird won the tip and passed it to Steph Gorman to start the game. 
  • Sydney Hunter scored the first two points for the Toreros with a layup off the glass.
  • Hunter led the team with six points in the first quarter.
  • Steph Gorman hits her first three-pointer at the top of the key and seconds later, steals the ball and scores a layup!
  • San Diego leads 34-32 at the half. 
  • Steph Gorman led the team in scoring and steals with eight points and four steals in the third quarter. 
  • In the fourth quarter, the Toreros grabbed 16 rebounds.

  • Steph Gorman scored 22 points which led to her exceeding 1,000 career points. 
  • Steph Gorman set a new career high of nine steals, exceeding her previous record of eight against LMU on February 8, 2022. 
  • Kendall Bird set a new career high of 11 rebounds, exceeding her previous record of eight against LMU on February 8, 2022.
  • The Toreros grabbed their highest number of rebounds in a single game, 45, against Cal Baptist. 

UP NEXT
San Diego will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to battle the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET.  The Toreros have an all time record of 2-1 against New Mexico and their most recent contest resulted in a 58-50 loss on December 11, 2004.
