Mautz, Meidroth and Sim Lead USD Past Pepperdine

Toreros take down Waves 8-1 in Malibu to even WCC series

MALIBU, Calif. — San Diego baseball (10-7, 1-1 WCC) took an early lead and never looked back on Saturday afternoon, evening its series with Pepperdine (10-7, 1-1 WCC) with an 8-1 win at Eddy D. Field Stadium that featured big performances from sophomores Chase Meidroth, Brycen Mautz, and Kevin Sim.

USD BATS COME ALIVE
  • Meidroth began the game with a leadoff home run, clobbering the second pitch he saw over Eddy D. Field Stadium's left field fence to give USD an early lead and notch his third longball of the season.
  • An inning later, fellow infielder Justin DeCriscio (true freshman) laid down a perfect bunt up the third base line, both driving in a run (junior catcher Caleb Ricketts) and earning himself a hit to double the San Diego advantage.
  • Junior shortstop Cody Jefferis made it a 3-0 game in the top of the fifth with a single to right field that brought home sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen.
  • Pepperdine got one back in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Connor Bradshaw, but USD answered back with a five-run ninth that saw redshirt sophomore Camden Vasquez and Allen come in to score on wild pitches, Meidroth notch an RBI single, and Sim drive in a pair with a scalded single back up the middle. By the end of the frame, San Diego led 8-1.
A COMPLETE PERFORMANCE ON THE MOUND
  • Mautz (Westview High School) turned in yet another dominant start on the mound on Saturday, scattering eight hits across six innings while walking none, striking out eight, and allowing just one run before he earned his team-best fourth win of the season to move to 4-1 in 2022.
  • He was relieved by redshirt sophomore righty Conner Thurman, who stranded the 6-foot-3 lefty's final baserunner of the day en-route to a pair of scoreless frames, allowing no hits while striking out four.
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander James Sashin threw a scoreless ninth to end it, working his way around a hit and a walk to secure his team the 8-1 victory and even the West Coast Conference series at one game apiece.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Meidroth led the way for USD with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored on Saturday.
  • Sim wasn't too far behind with two hits and two RBIs of his own.
  • Vasquez also put together a two-hit performance, notching a pair of singles and working a walk alongside one run scored.
  • Allen and Ricketts both recorded a single hit on the afternoon, with Allen coming across to score a pair of runs and Ricketts coming home once.
  • Jefferis was 1-for-5 with an RBI single and has now hit safely in four out of his last five games.
