Women's Basketball Fell to New Mexico in Second Round of WNIT; 73-69

Toreros left it all out on the court against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, CA — San Diego left it all on the court against New Mexico but fell short 73-69 at University Arena "The Pit."

Kiera Oakry led the Toreros with 17 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Also leading on offense was Ayanna Khalfani with 12 points, Kendall Bird with 11 points, and Erica Martinsen with nine points. Kiera Oakry and Erica Martinsen each shot 100% from the free throw line.

On defense, San Diego collected 43 rebounds. Leading the Toreros' defensive efforts for the second consecutive game was Kendall Bird with nine rebounds. In the fourth quarter alone, San Diego grabbed 15 rebounds. The Toreros also totaled four steals and had two blocks. 

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Kendall Bird won the tip and passed it to Kiera Oakry to start the game. 
  • San Diego pulled ahead to lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-12.
  • Kiera Oakry drove to the hoop, made the layup, and got fouled for a three-point play to start the second quarter. San Diego led 17-12 to start the quarter. 
  • Kendall Bird grabbed three rebounds in the second quarter. 
  • Kiera Oakry led the Toreros in scoring with nine points in the second quarter. 
  • The Toreros had 19 rebounds, one steal, and one block in the first half. 
  • San Diego trails 30-27 at halftime. 
  • In the third quarter, Kiera Oakry, Steph Gorman, and Kendall Bird contributed with three points each. 
  • Erica Martinsen hits a deep three-pointer to make it a four point game! San Diego trails 65-61 with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
