Chase Meidroth, and
Jack Costello turned in big afternoons at the plate and redshirt sophomore righty
James Sashin shined out of the bullpen as San Diego baseball (15-7, 5-1 WCC) earned its first sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon, beating Saint Mary's (14-10, 0-6 WCC) by an 11-6 margin with a late-game comeback at Fowler Park to notch its sixth straight win.
A BACK-AND-FORTH AFFAIR
- The Gaels struck first in the top of the first inning, plating a trio of runs via an RBI single and a pair of fielder's choices for a 3-0 lead.
- True to form, San Diego answered back in the bottom of the frame and tied it with an RBI single from Jefferis (junior shortstop), a sacrifice fly from sophomore centerfielder Dustin Allen, and an RBI single through the right side from Meidroth (sophomore infielder).
- Saint Mary's struck back in the top of the fifth, pulling ahead with an RBI double, a fielder's choice, and a throwing error to get back in front at 6-3.
- Again USD had an answer in the bottom half, storming back to tie it after sophomore utility player Will Worthington reached on an RBI bunt that plated Allen, Ricketts notched a sacrifice fly to deep center field that brought home Meidroth, and redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez shot a single through the left side to plate Worthington. By the end of the frame, the score was knotted at 6-6.
- San Diego grabbed its first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth when Meidroth proved to be a factor yet again, singling through the right side to bring home Jefferis before Worthington singled to the same spot to plate true freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio.
- Costello (sophomore utility player) delivered the finishing blow in the following at-bat, hammering a towering two-run homer to the deepest part of Fowler Park (right-center field) to give his team an 11-6 lead it would not relinquish.
SASHIN AND COLLERAN COME UP BIG OUT OF THE 'PEN
- Sashin set a new career-high with three scoreless innings on Sunday, doing so while scattering three hits, walking none, and striking out two.
- Sophomore lefty Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy) fired a scoreless ninth to secure the win, working around two hits with a strikeout.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Meidroth again led the way for the Toreros at the plate on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, and his team-best 18th and 19th walks of the season.
- Jefferis matched Meidroth's hit total with a 2-for-3 game of his own, driving in two while coming around to score two more alongside a walk.
- Allen was 1-for-3 with a run scored, DeCriscio was 1-for-4 with a run scored, Worthington was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs after entering as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth, Sim was 1-for-5, and Costello was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs after launching his third homer of 2022.
- Sashin earned his first career win to move to 1-0.
