Bats, Bullpen Lead San Diego to Seventh Straight Win

Toreros take down California Baptist at Totman Stadium on Tuesday night

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Another strong showing at the plate and a team effort on the mound earned San Diego baseball (16-7, 5-1 WCC) its seventh straight victory on Tuesday night, taking down California Baptist (16-7, 5-4 WAC) by a 7-2 margin at Totman Stadium.

TOREROS GRAB EARLY LEAD
  • Junior shortstop Cody Jefferis got the scoring started in the top of the first, drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring home sophomore infielder Will Worthington and give USD an early lead.
  • Sophomore Chase Meidroth doubled off the right field wall an inning later, plating sophomore centerfielder Dustin Allen to double the San Diego advantage.
  • The inning kept rolling when sophomore utility player Jack Costello singled to score Meidroth, then reigning WCC Player of the Week Caleb Ricketts (junior utility player) added on with an RBI single of his own to center field that brought home Worthington.
  • Costello and sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) proceeded to score from third on two different wild pitches during true freshman catcher Ariel Armas' at-bat (which resulted in a five-pitch walk). By the end of the frame, San Diego led by a score of 6-0.
  • CBU answered with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the second to cut the USD lead to 6-2, but they would get no closer, as Allen added some late-game insurance in the top of the eighth with an RBI single down the left field line that brought in Armas and gave San Diego a 7-2 advantage it would not relinquish.
THURMAN HIGHLIGHTS TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
  • Junior righty Jake Reed began the game on the mound for the Toreros in what marked his first career college start and tossed a pair of solid innings, striking out two against two hits and two earned runs.
  • Redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Robinson threw a career-high 2.2 scoreless frames out of the bullpen with three strikeouts, followed by sophomore lefty Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy), who chipped in with 2.1 run-free innings of his own that featured a pair of strikeouts.
  • Redshirt sophomore Conner Thurman then entered and turned in the most dominant pitching performance of the evening, striking out the side in both the eighth and the ninth as he twirled two scoreless innings to conclude the contest and secure his team the 7-2 win.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Meidroth extended his hit streak to a season-high nine games with a 2-for-4 evening, driving in a run in addition to scoring a run and drawing his team-high 20th walk of 2022.
  • Costello, Sim, and Ricketts joined Meidroth in putting together a multi-hit game, all going 2-for-5 as they combined for two runs scored and two RBIs.
  • Armas was 1-for-3 with a walk, Allen was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk, and Jefferis tied the game-high by drawing two walks.
  • Robinson picked up his second win of the season to move to 2-0.
