SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (5-5, 0-0 WCC) brought the game-tying run around third base in the bottom of the ninth against Dallas Baptist (6-5, 0-0 MVC) but could not complete the comeback on Sunday afternoon, dropping a bitter 5-4 decision to the Patriots to conclude the weekend series.
Sophomore
Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) singled with two outs in the game's final frame to begin the last-chance rally, then sophomore outfielder/first baseman
Jack Costello beat out an infield single to the shortstop to keep the line moving.
Sophomore infielder
Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) followed that up with a base hit through the right side that got Peraza off and running, but the utility player stumbled as he rounded third base and headed for home, falling to the turf nearly halfway down the line before he got back up and retreated back to the bag. Junior shortstop
Cody Jefferis then flied out to center field to end it, leaving the Toreros two runs shy of an impressive series victory over DBU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate left-hander Ian Churchill made his third start on the mound for the Toreros on Sunday and tossed 3.2 innings, surrendering four hits and a pair of earned runs alongside a walk and two strikeouts.
- Two homers, a double, and a single gave the Patriots a 5-0 advantage early on, then sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth struck back with a longball of his own, skying a three-run shot just over the left field wall that plated sophomores Dustin Allen (outfielder) and Will Worthington (infielder) to cut the deficit to two and make it a 5-3 ballgame.
- Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts singled in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Jefferis and bring USD within one at 5-4, but it would get no closer.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Meidroth, Costello, Sim, and Ricketts all had two hits on the afternoon, and Meidroth had a game-high three RBIs.
- Redshirt freshman righty Ryan Kysar threw 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, surrendering two hits, walking one, and striking out three.
- Redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Robinson worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth to preserve what was at the time just a two-run deficit.
- Sophomore lefty Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy) threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to finish the game for USD, which was one third of an inning shy of his career high. The Solana Beach, California native allowed just a hit and a walk, and retired the last six batters he faced in order.
