Men's Rowing Kicks Off Spring Season In Las Vegas

Toreros competed in Lake Las Vegas Invitational on Sunday afternoon

LAS VEGAS — USD men's rowing kicked off its spring season on Sunday at the Lake Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational, facing off against Cal, Drexel, Oregon State, and Santa Clara.

The weekend's schedule included three races for each crew, which were originally scheduled to be spread out between Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning. High winds, however, forced the Saturday races to be postponed, meaning that every race took place in a three-hour window on Sunday morning.

"We talk often about being ready to perform regardless of circumstances, and this weekend certainly proved why that concept is important," said head coach Bart Thompson after the event.

The team raced hard, ultimately finishing in third place across all six of their races.

"Our 1V came out very smooth in its first race, but ultimately we didn't put down the power needed to finish where we wanted to," Thompson added. "I think they did a much better job as the racing progressed of pushing the rate and pressure. Our 2V did not display the technical ability they are capable of in its first race, but improved a ton in its next race, which is evidenced by cutting down the deficit to Santa Clara by 15 seconds."

For the team, though, Thompson emphasized that being at the race this weekend was an achievement in itself.

"Due to illness and injury we only had 16 rowers and 2 coxswains available for this weekend, including one rower who is still in his first month of rowing," Thompson detailed. "So as much as anything else I'm proud of our guys for the commitment to each other that they displayed.Beyond that, this regatta was a tremendous opportunity for us in three ways. First, it allowed us to race against some of the best programs in the country, which is how we improve. Second, it allowed us to get back to spring racing—some of our guys had not raced a 2k in nearly two years, and most of them can count on one hand the total number of these races they've done in college. Lastly, we were able to race in a distinct, memorable location in Las Vegas; we feel that providing these sort of exceptional experiences to our squad is one of many great parts of being a member of this program."

The team's next race is in three weeks at the San Diego Crew Classic, an infamous regatta that traditionally has been the unofficial kickoff for the spring racing season across the nation.

"The Crew Classic is one of the most prestigious regattas in America, and it means a ton to the SDMR family, including our alumni," Thompson described. "After two years of not being able to truly gather for it we can't wait to be together on the weekend of March 25-26."
